Vulcan Bomber

A short personal memory

I was at a scout summer camp in Yorkshire and was in a small rowing boat on a straight stretch of the river Ouse when a mighty roar broke the silence.

A Vulcan bomber flew straight toward us, flying very low along the river. It started to turn into a climb and was pretty much heading vertically up when it was directly over our heads.

While this was astounding in itself, a few moments later the boat was rocked by the force of the exhausts from those massive jets. We felt the heat of the engines and wondered about the power of these impressive machines. This would have been around 1980, so just two years before the Vulcans were used in anger for the first and last time, down in the south atlantic.
